After I Complete The 4-Week Intro, What’s Next?!

Intermediate Classes & The Road to Advanced Classes

After completing the 4-Week Introduction to Boxing or Muaythai/Kickboxing program, you will be eligible to participate in Intermediate Classes. In Intermediate Class, you learn how to put things together and bridge the gap between all of your techniques so you can use them for defense and later, for sparring. A big part of this process is repetition and repeating the fundamental techniques until they become comfortable or muscle memory.

After 3 months of consistent practice, you will be eligible to take the Level 1 Test which encompasses everything you learned in Intermediate Classes. If you are beginning to worry about what is on the test, do not worry! We have a Boxing and Muaythai Skills cheat sheet with everything you need to know to pass the test. The importance of the test isn’t just knowing what’s on it, but being able to do it skillfully, which comes with practice and repetition. When you take the test, the focus from the test facilitator is proper technique. So if you want to pass and move on to the advanced classes you should be in intermediate class 4 times a week.

To move on to the next level, you must be a proficient Pad Holder. Everyone in the advanced classes must be a good pad holder. The first 3 months we focus on developing our technique, once you level up into Advanced class we move on to sharpening our technique.

You are responsible for being a good training partner. Our goal in these classes is to grow as a team. You should be able to train with everyone. You only need to pass one of the Certifications to move up.

For example, if you’re planning to focus on Muaythai, you should pass the Muaythai level test and get your Thai Pad Certification. Muaythai students are expected to also get certified to hold Focus Mitts as well within 3 months of joining the advanced classes. You will be allowed to attend the Focus Mitt Certification course for free once you have passed your Muaythai Level test, and obtained your Thai Pad Certification. You are expected as a Muaythai student to be proficient with Focus Mitts as well. Boxing is a crucial part of our Muaythai and Kickboxing programs, so we will train with both styles of pads/mitts.

Keep in mind this is the first big step in your journey. If you plan to move from this stage to the Competition Team there is a lot of work to be done. If you do plan to compete, make sure you pick up the 6 Week Fight Camp sheet to get familiar with the requirements to compete. This is a process that Coach Jason has used with everyone that has walked through the door, whether their goal was to compete or just train like a competitive athlete. We know that this process is what has created all the results we have achieved over the years and we are proud to guide our students along their journey as opposed to just backing people with natural athletic talent. We prefer to help build all of our students and help them achieve their goals from the ground up.

Luther “Lights Out” Smith KO’s Opponent in Less than Two Minutes in Exhilarating Professional Debut at Age 36

BOWIE, MD., March 31, 2015 / —Fighting out of Level Up Boxing & Fitness in Bowie, Maryland, Heavyweight Luther “Lights Out” Smith made his professional boxing debut this past weekend. He knocked out his opponent 1 minute, 39 seconds into the first round. Smith’s debut bout was the Co-headlining fight of the Bulldog Brawl, held at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, Virginia on Saturday, March 28th. The event was presented by RBA Promotions and Jeter Promotions.

Smith is currently 36 years old, but has already accomplished more in his short 3 years of training than many fighters half his age will accomplish their entire careers. As an amateur, Smith was a 2014 WKA Silver and Bronze World Medalist, the 2014 WKA North American Kickboxing Champion, the 2014 Revolution Series Muay Thai Heavyweight Champion, and the 2013 Jeter Promotions Maryland State Boxing Heavyweight Champion. One of his previous knock-outs was featured on AXS TV’s Inside MMA in October.

“Age is just a number,” explains Smith, who just recently left a comfortable government position to pursue his dream of becoming a Professional World Champion Fighter, “You can do anything you want to do if you truly want to do it. You just need to be willing to put in the work and dedication.”

Smith is a driving force behind the entire Level Up Boxing & Fitness Fight Team, which includes several more North American and World Champion fighters. Over 100 spectators showed up just to witness his professional debut.

“He is the heart and soul of our family,” explains Level Up Head Coach Jason Farrell, “Nobody cheers louder or motivates our team the way Luther does. To be as good as he is at his age—at any age, really—is incredible.”

Smith plans to make professional debuts in Muay Thai and Kickboxing in the near future.

Joining A Fight Team

So I just got home from watching the new movie Fury with Brad Pitt. It got me thinking about the early days of my journey. Joining a gym with a competitive Fight Team that you want to be a part of is not an easy task. Many don’t have what it takes mentally. I can assure you that at the end of the day, thats what matters most. The physical gifts you were born with or worked for will only take you so far. Making it through what ever is necessary to become a member of the Team is a different type of accomplishment.

fury_ver2_xlg

In the movie, the Tank Team gets a new member. I won’t go into too many details and ruin the movie, but at first, they aren’t too thrilled about having him. This is one of the parallels that made me think back to my early days as a “Fight Team Hopeful”. I knew exactly what I joined my gym for. I wanted to Fight. My very first day I met Mike Easton, Mike gave me a tour of the gym, went through some basics with me, and talked to me for about an hour about fighting and becoming a part of the Fight Team. Mike is that kind of guy, he genuinely is the type that is excited to talk about fighting, very down to earth, and very welcoming. I was fortunate that he was my guide my frist day. Thats not alwasy the case in every gym.  I know that if I’d had a different experience, I’d still be where I am, because I was set to my task. That said, I am very appreciative for having that experience. In the movie, the “new guy” wasn’t welcomed with open arms. Not by the team, not by their leader. He hasn’t done anything wrong, but he is coming into a group that fought and bled together. They have shared experiences and time that can’t be easily replicated, and possibly never will be. This is where those parellels started to jump out at me.

There is a quote by Jim Rohn. “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. You take a group of people, that have sparred with each other, traveled with each other, been through all the highs and lows of Winning and Losing, you will see a little of each of them in each person. They move the same way, talk the same way, find the same things funny, they become a unit. So adding someone new into the mix won’t be an overnight process. This is where tough skin, and being mentally tough comes into play. Understanding that you need to put the time in, and that it’s not that they don’t like you. It may seem like that sometimes, but thats not usually the case (unless your just an asshole) From the time they spend together they develop those similarities and bond that you won’t understand until you’re in it. What is also tough for the new guy/girl to realize also is that many have come and gone. So although it’s not as drastic as War, where soldiers have seen other soldiers come, and die, all fight teams have had hopeful new member that start off with promise, yet eventually fade out. It’s just the nature of the game. So without realizing it, that core group will begin to put up a barrier, and not get attached to people as quickly. It’s human nature.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 10.57.38 PM

Also it’s important to take into account the “Rookie” stage. In pretty much anything you do in life you will need to get through this. Embrace it, understand that it’s going to be one of the toughest parts of your journey, but that it will also shape you for years to come. How you chose to navigate it could put you on a path to success, or send you in the complete opposite direction. Swallow your pride, take your licks, and press on. We have all at one point been the Rookie. It’s a right of passage. I’d reccomend keeping a journal. Document those moments. Having a real reminder of where you came from can ground you out when you need it. One day when you are the vet, that journal maybe helpul to a new Rookie.

Hang In There Rookie

Hang In There Rookie

A lot of this process falls to the leader. There maybe times where the Leader/Coach has become jaded the same as the Team. As I said people come and go. A coaches time is valuable. Accepting the time they offer is a contract. They give you their time and knowledge, YOU GOTTA DO SOMETHING WITH IT!! Even if you never become a Professional Fighter, if you desire to be a member of the Fight Team you need to be willing to commit to it. With that commitment comes the responsibilty of also being there for your teammates. They need you at practice, they need you at the fights. Keep in mind, we are talking about being a Member of the Elite Group of the gym. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a casual member, the majority of people who train are, but once you have taken this step you should be sure you are truly prepared for what is required on your end. There’s no such thing as being a part time Fight Team Member. That does you and your Teammates no good. Another favorite quote of mine is “There is no standing still, you are either moving towards your goals, or away from them”. Let that sink in. The time you decide you have other things that come before the team and your training will set you back tremendously. It also creates a terrible cycle, you will take your break, come back, notice everyone has gotten better and is now a step a head, and some will stick it out for a bit. They start to feel like they are catching back up, then something else comes a long and pulls them out. Now you fall even further behind. Guys/Girls you started with now have fights under their belt. Eventually these types will lose their fire, mostly because they come back in and try to jump back into sparring and working with the Fight Team, then get a dose of how far behind they have fallen. If the team has a solid Leader/Coach, they will know how to guide you through all these things, and at what pace more importatntly. They have done it before, so listen to them, trust that they have your best interests at heart and follow their lead.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.
John Quincy Adams

So take all this into account. Keep in mind that just because you join a gym with a Fight Team, doesn’t mean that has to be your path. If you train for fun or to get into shape, the majority of the classes are taylored towards you. You are an important part of the culture. If the Fight Team is something you thibk you want to be a part of, make sure you REALLY want it, and understand that giving your commitment to them, earns their commitment to you. I can personally tell you that I can’t imagine what my life would be without my Team. They are my family, I love them with all my heart, and I know they feel the same. If I was every in trouble I know I could count on them, and they know they can count on me. That bond is something special you won’t find many other places in life.

Coach Jason.

2 Fights 2 Victories at Revolution Fight Series

September 20th 2014 the Level Up Fight Team returned to action in Winchester Virginia. William Anderson would be fighting Modified Muay Thai Rules against a very game Evan Green of Disciple MMA. Luther Smith who has had a hard time getting matched up at his fighting weight of 209lbs would move up to fight IKF Heavyweight Champion Chris Sanders.

As always RFS runs a smooth show. Weigh Ins are the best we have ever experienced. They start when they say they will start, and as soon as you arrive you can weigh in, and be on your way. Level Up fighters are no strangers to the Winchester fight scene. It’s an active community and continues to grow. This would be Revolutions 10th show. They have gone the way of mixing MMA and Muay Thai fights together to create an exciting event for all comers. You can always expect unbiased matchmaking, which in turn creates great fights.

First up for the night we had Will Anderson. Will is a hardworking Electrician that gets up earlier than most people I know, then come sstraight to the gym to train. He puts in the work and his results speak for themselves. We drew a tough fighter in the way of Evan Green. Evan and Will had matching 2-1 records, that coupled with the fact that Evan trains at Disciple MMA let us know that this would be a tough fight. Disciple is very well known for their Muay Thai and it was an honor to share a ring with them.

Take a look at Will’s fight! You may need to Log in to Facebook!

CLICK HERE—->Post by Revolution Fight Series.
Up Next we had “Lights Out” Luther Smith. As we mentioned before, Luther was having trouble gettinng matched up. We put it out there that we could also fight at Heavyweight if there was an available opponent. Chris Sanders stepped up, and we had our fight. Things looked a bit shakey at weigh ins. Sanders came in at 271lbs, Luther weighed in closer to 220lbs. It appreared momentarily  that the fight may not be possible due to the difference in weight. We assured the GCA that we were aware of the weight difference and that Luther came to fight regardless. After a phone call everything was set.

Here is a short Highlight of Luther’s Fight!

CONGRATS TO LUTHER ON HIS NEW TITLE AND WILL FOR BRINGING HOME ANOTHER W!!

Warriors Cup 21

The Level Up fight team found it’s way back to New Jersey competing at the vaunted Warriors Cup Muay Thai promotion.

Warriors Cup is one of the best shows I have ever dealt with. Chris Tran is an amazing match maker. It’s rare you will find a mismatched fight on this promotion. This type of match making provides incredible action packed fights. Chris also is very considerate of the fighters needs and is constantly checking on everyone to make sure they are good to go throughout the night. New Jersey athletic commission also has very stringent testing that must be completed before fighting. This gives all involved piece of mind that the State cares about the well being of these athletes putting their well being on the line for what they love to do.

Originally Level Up had two fighters on the card. Patrick Rivera was set to fight George Jeffries out of North Carolina for the 160lbs Title. Jeffries was forced to withdraw from the bout due to an injury a couple weeks before the event. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time to find someone willing to step up and take his place.

Jared Tipton would be facing Joe Logan of Stay Fly Muay Thai for the 125lbs Amatuer A class Title. We expected a tough fight from Joe. Logan has been on a similar path to Jared. It was only a matter of time before these two met. Jared had a relatively easy weight cut. He stays on a healthy diet to always be ready for any opportunity they presents itself. Weigh Ins went smoothly, Jared and Joe squared off with the belt one of them would be taking home the next day.

Waiting To Weigh In

Logan & Tipton

Logan & Tipton

The fight played as we expected. Back and forth action. Joe set his sights on Jareds lead leg. Jared worked his hand combinations, caught Joes kicks and was able to sweep him throughout the round. Midway through round one, Jared caught Logan in the clinch and delivered a hard knee to the face, at the time it appeared not to have done much damage. The two tied up again moments later where Jared was able to deliver another knee that landed flush on Logans nose which clearly broke it. Round one ended in favor of Jared. Logans coach Justin Greskiewicz was able to straighten the nose out and get Joe back in the fight. Rounds two and three went the same, Jared mixing up his hands, elbows and knees, looking to sweep Logan whenever possible, Joe continued hunting for Jareds leg. Going into round four I felt we had done enough to win the first three rounds.

In rounds four and five the low kicks appeared to take a toll on Jared. For anyone that knows him or has seen him fight, Jared never slows down. His relentless pace and pressure are what has won him all his previous fights. These last two rounds though he slowed down tremendously giving Logan the opportunity to turn it up and win the final rounds. Although mathematically I feel we won the fight three rounds to two, I also feel that the final two rounds are the championship rounds, and to be a champion those are the two rounds that count the most. I’m proud of Jared for his performance. He mixed up all his weapons very well and displayed that he can make use of everything available in Muay Thai. Obviously we want to win every fight, but if we lose we learn. So even though it stings, it’s an important part of the process headed towards a Professional career. We will make the necessary adjustments and come back stronger than ever.

2 Fighters 2 Victories At Lion Fight 17

I had to take a couple weeks to get my thoughts together for this blog. The events that took place, and the road to get there still seem surreal. My journey as a Martial Artist began 28 years ago. Although I’m nowhere near where I would want to end my journey, if I was hit by a bus tomorrow I’d have no regrets. I’m so proud of what my team has done in this first year. My ambition to be a major part of the growth of Muay Thai and Kickboxing here in America drives me to take on more than I probably should. Knowing that I have the Level Up Team behind me every step of the way makes it all possible. I’m honored they put their faith in me to lead them into all the craziness I seem to get us into.

Taking It All In

Taking It All In

I joined an MMA gym in 2006. MMA and BJJ were the programs that got the most attention. It always felt like the Muay Thai program was like the step kids in the family (haha) So I decided that I would help to lead the way for Muay Thai here in Maryland. In 2008 I was given the opportunity to Teach Muay Thai at two gyms. I spent 5 years building those programs to the best of my ability. In the end I still felt like I wasn’t able to push the program forward the way I wanted. So in July of 2013, I started running classes in my hometown of Bowie, MD. August 1st became our official opening of Level Up. In that time we have had over 30 fights, won 3 National Titles, and had 3 fights on Lion Fight, and on our 1 Year Anniversary, August 1st 2014, Jared and Pat fought and won on Lion Fight 17.

We drove down the night before weigh ins so we could wake up in Connecticut Thursday morning and cut any weight that needed to be shed. We checked out of our hotel and headed over to the Foxwoods Spa. Around 1pm we went down to check the guys weight on the official scale. Both fighters were on so we went to check into our room at the Two Trees Hotel. Weigh Ins went pretty quickly, after you could find all the fighters munching on whatever they had with them until they saw the doctor.

In what definitely rates high in being one of the coolest moments of the weekend, I got a text from Kevin Ross asking how the guys were. We were headed to get food and invited him to come with. He graciously accepted so we scooped him up and headed to Koto our favorite Habachi restaurant near the Casino. We have a ritual of seeing a movie after weigh ins, so the 4 of us shot over to the local theater and caught Guardians of the Galaxy. Just when you think Kevin Ross can’t get any cooler, he buys all of our tickets to the movie. I’m forever grateful to Kevin for hanging out with us. They always say “never meet your heroes”, I can tell you that if Kevin is one of your heroes you will not be disappointed, and if he isn’t one of your heroes he should be. I know it meant so much to Jared and Pat. It was a genuinely cool move from a genuinely cool guy.

Chillin With The Prez

Chillin With The Champ

Fight day we pack up what we need and head to the venue. We were able to share our warm up area with our friends Jeremy Carper and Jessica Palencer from West Virginia. Jessica stepped up late to take a fight at a lower weight class than she has ever fought, and went out there and fought her as off. We were all very proud of her.

DMV Crew

DMV Crew

Jared was first up for us for the night. Jared is a tenacious fighter. He is building a reputation for his non stop action performances. He rarely ever stops coming forward, and if he does, it’s only to give his opponent an opportunity to miss before his next onslaught. In the end Jared won a unanimous decision. Jared displayed all his weapons, big punches, hard low kicks, vicious clinch knees, and when the dust settled, his hand was raised. I’ll let the incredible work of our friend Dan Eric tell the story.

Patrick would headline the amatuer undercard against a game Nathaniel King. Patrick fought a very smart fight as he always does. Picking his shots carefully, landing clean punches and hard low kicks. We are big fans of catching kicks and dumping people at Level Up. It’s become part of Patricks signature in all his fights. If you like to throw body kicks, you can count on ending up on your back. Kevin Ross is one of the best in the biz, and someone we study regularly. At dinner the night before Pat told Kevin that “when” he got a big sweep he planned to find Kevin in the crowd and pay him respect. Pat was able to sweep Nate a few times but one was super clean, and Patrick seized the moment to honor his word. Kevin smiled from the crowd, noded, as in to say good job, now get back in there! In the end Patrick would also be awarded a unanimous decision Win. Again, Dan’s pictures tell the story better than I do.

To have a night like this on our one year anniversary is more than I can ask for. As I sat there ringside watching the Pro Card, I couldn’t believe what we had done. This first year has been a constant grind. We are all hungry lions with insatiable appetites. We are on the hunt for whatever it is we want of life. I’m excited to see where we are a year from now.

Luther Smith Brings Home His 4th Kickboxing Victory

Luther Smith claims his 4 Kickboxing victory at the Bethlehem Brawl at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem PA.

This show was run by the promoters of the XFE MMA Organization, with Match Maker Eric Utsch. Luther would face off against an independent 2-1 Kickboxer Dante Manganili. Dante was from nearby so needless to say the crowd was on his side. At the end of the fight Luther won them over with his big finish.

Luther Will Be heading to Italy in Ocotber to fight for a World Title at the WKA Worlds Tournament. To help him get there please follow this link!!

———–> HELP LIGHTS OUT GO TO WORLDS!! <——————–

2 Fighters 2 Victories at Thai Championship Boxing 8

TCB 8 Would see the return of Level Up’s Will Anderson, and the debut of Nick Rossman.

Will would be facing an experienced and slightly heavier MMA fighter from Capital MMA. Nick faced off with another debuting young fighter from Kaizen. TCB 8 took place at the Nzone in Chantilly VA. The production value of the show was very high. Great lighting and sound, plenty of seating for attendees, and an action packed card stacked with 20 Fights which included multiple Title bouts.

Up first for Level Up would be Will Anderson. Will is a hard working electrician, who commutes from Baltimore to DC everyday. Getting up at 3am to go to work, coming straight to Level Up after, and sometimes staying as late as 9pm training. Whether its for himself or to help a teammate. A while back Will asked Coach Jason Farrell for a way to make his kicks stronger, Coach Jason gave him a method he used | TOP SECRET | and since then Will has developed one of the most dangerous kicks on the Team.

Will’s opponent John Kermon is an experienced MMA fighter, who had a size advantage as well. both fighters fought smart game plans. Will took his time, found his range, and turned it up in the third landing some vicious low kicks, securing a Unanimous Decision. Have a look at the video!

Nick Rossman may be the toughest member on our team. He has the least amount of experience, but makes up for it with enormous heart, and an iron chin. Nick has had an odd string of luck with his young fight career. At the WKA National Tournament both of his opponents would be unable to fight before Nick made it to the ring. One was TKO’d in another division, the other was forced to leave before the finals due to time restraints. Shortly after that nick was to appear on a card, that ended up being canceled entirely. Undeterred, Nick continued to show up at the gym, ready for any opportunity that presented itself. He also has been one of Jared Tiptons main training partners leading up to the most recent Lion Fight event.

Nick would draw Tue Nguyen of Kaizen. Tue finished his camp independently with another fighter from the card Nathan Boisvert. This was a great test for Nick. Tue was very scrappy and threw some unorthodox strikes that forced Nick to switch his game plan some. Through round one through 3, Nick would chop his opponents lead leg every opportunity he had. By the third round the kicks would really begin to add up, causing the ref to halt the bout twice to give Tue a standing 8 count. Nick would be awarded a Split Decision Win, we had it as a Unanimous victory, but either way, he got the win.  We are extremely proud of Nick. One thing we stress here is if you get hit, or kicked, kick back! Nick took this philosophy into the ring and made it his. Check out the video here!

This show was very well run, and obviously the results were what we hoped for. Coach Jason thanks everyone that came out to support, and congratulates our former Teammates on their victories at TCB 8 as well. Thanks also to Coach Patrick Rivera who put in a lot of time helping Nick get ready as he himself prepared for his Lion Fight bout. Thanks also to Luther Smith for putting in extra time with Will to help him prepare. Everything we accomplish at Level Up is done as a Team, and couldn’t be done any other way.

August 1st Lion Fight Promotions will run their second East Coast card featuring some of the Best Muay Thai fighters the East Coast has to offer. Including our very own Jared Tipton and Patrick Rivera. The event takes place at the illustrious Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. Patrick fought and won on LF’s first East Coast show. We are very excited to have back on a Lion Fight event. For those who don’t know, Lion Fight is the premier Muay Thai organization in the World. Fighters from all over the globe are hoping for a chance to be a part of these incredible events. This is a huge step forward for Muay Thai, the East Coast, and Level Up!

pat and jurt

Lion Fight runs the majority of their shows in Las Vegas. They recently signed a deal to run multiple events with Foxwoods giving fighters from this side of the US a chance to shine. It is of utmost importance that we support this show every time! Without them there is no great stage for all our hard work to be displayed. The fight game is a Team effort. Everyone involved is important. The promoters of these events need us to spread the word and bring as many people to cheer on our fighters as posisble. Just like we need our fighters to work hard in prepartion for these tough fights.

At Level Up we need the SUPPORT of YOU!! Our loyal teammates. To make sure Lion Fight is succesful and continues to return to the East Coast, we need to sell tickets to this amazing show!! Even if you can’t make it, show your support of Pat and Jared and pick up a ticket! Lets show Lion Fight we are not only a vicious Fight Team, but more importantly a Family the supports each other!

The tickets are $55. We have a few different people driving up, so we can help get people together for car pooling. Just speak to Coach Jason about getting teamed up! If you can help out by buying a ticket, but can’t make it up to the show, NO WORRIES!! Coach Jason will be running a seminar in September going over some new things he picked up on his trip to California. Your ticket gets you into that seminar for FREE! The seminar itself will be $60.

We will have Walkout T shirts for Pat and Jared also. If you would like one they will be $10 per shirt. We have been fortunate to have some amazing sponsors join the cause to help these young athletes move forward with their careers!

The Level Up Fight Team Strikes Again

This weekend The Level Up Fight Team was back at it again. The Team made its first trip to fight in New Jersey. The show was Warriors Cup which is one of the best Muay Thai shows on the East Coast. The Cup is WBC sanctioned making it one of the important events to fight on in the US. The card would feature two National WBC Title Fights as well as two amatuer title fights. Level Up was originally slated to have Jared Tipton and Patrick Rivera both fighting on the card. Unfortunately we were informed the week of the fight that Jareds opponent was unable to compete.

Patrick would be facing a tough opponent Joe Bastone of Impact Martial Arts. Joe has a winning record of 5-1 with a couple knockout finishes. We knew our game plan needed to be sound and executed properly. Patrick is a very strategic and smart fighter. To win the fight he used all the weapons available to him. Mixing his boxing, leg kicks and some strong clinch work Rivera was awarded a Unanimous Decision. After the result was announced to two fighters hugged in a show of mutual respect for one another. Seeing this type of sportsmanship is always a great thing.

We were very honored to be a part of this amazing card. Chris Tran of Warriors Cup is one of the most gracious Promoters we have worked with. We felt at home the entire time, and plan to compete on every upcoming Warriors Cup there is. The event was recorded by Go Fight Live and can be ordered at GFL.tv. If you missed the action, or would just like to see it again head over now and enjoy the show.
